I am a big believer in the \"Open Floor Plan\" which has fewer walls and doors, with rooms tied together as open visual space. Keeping the Great Room, Dining Room and Kitchen \"open\" (meaning no walls between them) help make all the rooms \"feel bigger\". The wall removal helps facilitate the open communications between the rooms. You don't feel isolated in the kitchen when wall barriers are removed, and thus people don't have to step into the kitchen to talk to you. They can do it from outside the kitchen zone.
I'm sure you've read plenty of other guides that proclaim to offer the 'top 10 tips' for something or other, that, in the end, turn out to be lists of highly generalised, unhelpful statements about things that you already knew i.e. \"Remember to set a budget, and stick to it!\", as if you were deliberately going to set a budget and then do your utmost to spend more than you intended.
Until a few years ago, modernizing a kitchen meant purchasing a new refrigerator, range, a combination sink and painting the kitchen in a bright, shiny white. We have come a long way in only a few years. The most striking aspect of the contemporary kitchen is its color. White has been displaced by more sophisticated colors. Counter space has been increased. Storage has been engineered to provide maximum use of all available space. Everything is within easy reach. Today's kitchen blends into the home. It is not a room apart, but a part of the home's living area.
